April Spotlight: Fred Muse

Fred Muse is a Mississippi-based artist, and the father of Louise Muse founder Audrey Muse.

We asked him some questions. Here's what he had to say.

Describe your work in your own words.

I describe my watercolor artwork as detailed yet approachable. Because watercolor can be a challenging medium when it comes to precision, I focus on control and layering to bring out fine detail.

I’m drawn to subjects that feel engaging and enjoyable to create, and I hope that sense of interest carries through in the finished work. At the same time, I remain mindful of the viewer, aiming to create pieces that are not only meaningful to me but also accessible and inviting to others.

Presentation is an important part of my process. I give careful thought to framing, often favoring clean mats—or no mat at all—so the work feels crisp, simple, and ready to live comfortably in someone’s space.

To you, what defines ‘good art’? Why is good art important?

If you like it, then it’s good art. I truly believe that. A master’s work can be good art, and so can something you find in an antique store or on the street. That’s what makes art so special—the same piece can be loved by one person and not resonate with another.

I’m naturally drawn to art that evokes a memory: of the artist, of who I was with when I first saw it, or of the subject itself. Art can take you to a place of joy simply by looking at it. That’s why art matters.

What’s your favorite piece of clothing you own?

I’m generally a rule follower—but this is an exception. There are a few clothing items and accessories I believe I’ll always have. A long-sleeved white button-up shirt with a spread collar is essential. It is super versatile from wearing with a suit to shorts. There’s something about the crispness of a white shirt that just works for me.

I also love a chambray shirt. Living in the south, it’s a fabric that is great year-round. When it comes to accessories, I must have chukka boots and my belt with a solid sterling silver buckle engraved with “MUSE.”

What does ‘style’ mean to you?

I stive to be “put together”…not always successfully. I’m drawn to observing the full spectrum of personal style—classic, streetwear, minimalist, vintage, etc. I admire those who wear their chosen style with ease and confidence.

Personally, I lean toward a modern, updated take on classic style. I try to be intentional with small, complementary accents, like my belt, eyewear, or shoes. Ultimately, I see style as something that extends beyond clothing and accessories. For me, kind people have ‘style’, no matter what they are wearing.
